The Best Sourdough Waffles

This is a delicious and easy sourdough waffle recipe! The perfect family breakfast, and the leftovers reheat wonderfully!

What you need to make the best sourdough waffles:

1 Cup Sourdough Starter (active or discard)

1 Cup Milk (or buttermilk)

1/2 Cup Melted Butter (Butter will make this recipe have the best flavor, but you could easily substitute a different cooking oil.)

2 Eggs

1 1/2 Cups Flour

1 TBSP Sugar

1 Tsp Salt

1 Tsp Baking Soda

How to make the best sourdough waffles:

Step One:

Plug in your waffle maker and get it preheating to a medium-high temperature. Melt butter in the microwave or on the stove and let it cool slightly.

Step Two:

Measure and combine the sourdough starter, milk, butter, and eggs. Next, mix in the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.

Step Three:

Once the waffle maker is hot, scoop about 1/4 cup of the batter at time onto the waffle iron and close it. Then, leave the waffle maker closed until it indicates that it is done. Next, open and check for desired crispiness. Serve immediately, or place on a cooling rack to preserve the crisp.

FAQs:

How much does this recipe make?

This recipe makes about 10 waffles.

Can they be reheated?

Yes!! Store the sourdough waffles in the fridge. When you are ready to reheat, tear the waffle into quarters and reheat in the toaster. The toaster will bring back the crispiness.

Notes from the homestead:

I love recipes that can easily be reheated for littles first thing in the morning. My little boy wakes up HUNGRY. This recipe is perfect for that because it reheats so nicely in the toaster. But let’s be real, he doesn’t mind eating them cold, straight from the fridge either! The faster I can get breakfast on the table, the faster I can get out to the garden.

This sourdough waffle recipe is great because it uses a generous amount of sourdough starter. I don’t typical store my sourdough starter in the fridge, so that means that I am feeding it everyday. This creates an abundance of starter. I also like that this recipe uses up a couple of eggs, as we always have an abundance of those with 20 laying hens on the property!
