The Best & Easiest Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches

This really is the best easy crockpot french dip sandwiches recipe that there is. And the whole family will enjoy it! Let the crockpot do the work, and then quickly build these sandwiches for a gooey, melty supper!

Why should you make this Easy Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches recipe?

It takes just a few ingredients and is very hands off.

It is a versatile way to use a beef roast instead of the traditional “Roast with potatoes and carrots”. (Although that is delicious as well)

It is kid friendly. My 4 year old approves of the “Roast Beast Sandwiches”.

What you need to make Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches:

  • One 3lb beef chuck roast or beef arm roast
  • 2 cans of Campbell’s French Onion Soup or 1 pint jar of home canned french onion soup
  • 1 pouch of Lipton’s Onion Soup mix
  • 6 sandwich rolls
  • 6 slices provolone sliced cheese
Ingredient: Arm roast, canned french onion soup, pouch of onion soup mix

How to make Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches:

Step One:

Place roast in the bottom of a 7 qt. crockpot. Sprinkle the Lipton’s Soup over the roast, and then pour the canned soup over the top. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or until the meat is very tender and shreds apart easily.

Step Two:

Preheat oven to 375f. Remove meat from the crockpot, but leave the crockpot on warm so the juices don’t get cold. It will be used as the au jus for dipping. Shred the roast with 2 forks.

Step Three:

Cut open the sandwich buns and cover both sides with your desired amount of shredded meat. Place one or two pieces of provolone on each sandwich.

Step Four:

Bake for 5 minutes and then turn the oven on high broil for 1-3 minutes. Don’t walk away at this point. Watch closely as you just want the cheese to be good and melty. Things can burn quickly on broil (ask me how I know, haha!)

Step Five:

Remove from the oven, close the sandwiches, and serve with a ramekin or small bowl of the remaining juices for dipping.

I typically use a hoagie roll when purchasing from the store. However, when I photographed this recipe I used a homemade honey wheat roll (recipe to come in the future). It would even be delicious to cut open a package of hawaiian rolls, add the meat and cheese, and eat it as sliders. YUM!

How do you make home canned french onion soup?

I follow the recipe in the “All New Ball Cookbook.” It is a pressure canned recipe, I use my Presto Electric Pressure Canner for this.

Tips for making these Easy Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches:

**Make sure to keep your eyes on the oven when you put it on broil. It doesn’t take but a few seconds to go from perfectly melted to burnt with that high of heat.**

Only make as many sandwiches as you plan on eating that evening. Refrigerate the meat and au jus for leftovers, as the sandwiches are much better made fresh.

Our Hot Honey Sweet Potatoes would be a great companion for this recipe!

Notes from the homestead:

We get quite a few roasts when we get our steer butchered bi-annually. I am always looking for creative ways to use them up, and this recipe is one of my go-tos which is why I decided to share it!

I am an avid canner, and you will frequently find that I am using home canned things in the recipes I share. You can always buy these ingredients at the store, but if you do wish to start your own canning journey I would recommend getting a Ball cookbook. I believe it is extremely important to only use tested recipes when canning, so you won’t find me sharing canning recipes here.
